X/Twitter Glossary
A follower is an account that has chosen to subscribe to your posts, meaning your content will appear in their Following feed.
When someone follows you on X, they're subscribing to see your content. Your posts will appear in their Following feed, and they'll be notified of your posts if they have notifications on. Follower count is one of the most visible metrics on X—it appears on your profile and signals your audience size. However, follower count alone is a vanity metric. Engaged followers who interact with your content are far more valuable than passive followers who never engage.
Followers represent your core audience—people who actively chose to hear from you. A solid follower base provides consistent baseline engagement for your posts, which helps with algorithm distribution. More importantly, followers are the pool from which you can convert to customers, subscribers, or community members. However, obsessing over follower count at the expense of engagement quality is a common mistake.
Social Graph helps you visualize and analyze your follower relationships to find growth opportunities.
