X/Twitter Glossary

What is Blue Check (Verification)?

The blue check is a verification badge on X, now available through X Premium subscription ($8/mo) rather than the previous invite-only legacy verification system.

Full Explanation

The blue checkmark used to indicate that X had verified an account's identity—confirming the person was who they claimed to be. In 2023, Elon Musk changed the system: now anyone can get a blue check by subscribing to X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) for $8/month. Legacy verified accounts (verified under the old system) retained their checks. X Premium includes benefits beyond the badge: edit button, longer posts, reduced ads, revenue sharing eligibility, and allegedly prioritized algorithm distribution.

Why It Matters

The blue check now serves a different purpose than before. Rather than signaling verified identity, it largely signals X Premium subscription. However, X has stated that Premium subscribers get some algorithm priority—their replies appear higher, and their content may be distributed more. For creators serious about growth, the algorithm benefits might justify the cost. The badge also still carries some psychological credibility with casual users.

Examples

  • Blue check next to your name indicates X Premium subscription
  • Gold check indicates a verified organization/business
  • Gray check indicates a government or multilateral organization
  • Premium replies are boosted to appear higher in conversations

Tips for Creators

  • 1.Consider X Premium for the algorithm benefits, not just the badge
  • 2.Premium unlocks longer posts (up to 4,000 characters)
  • 3.You need Premium to be eligible for ad revenue sharing
  • 4.The edit button (Premium feature) is useful for fixing typos
  • 5.Weigh the $8/month cost against your growth goals
